In observance of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), the movie “Silent Exodus” will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, May 2, in the Blanchard Room of the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. in Davis.
According to a news release, this one-hour documentary details how Jews were ethnically cleansed from Arab countries after World War II. From a population of more than 800,000 in 1949, the Jewish population of those countries today numbers only about 6,000.
“The movie describes how Arab countries forced their Jewish inhabitants to live in ghettoes, enacted laws that specifically targeted Jews, used pretexts to attack and kill their Jewish neighbors, cast those who survived out of their homes, and robbed all of those who left of their property,” the press release said.
“But the movie also describes how these forgotten Jewish refugees found refuge in the new state of Israel, where they never asked for any compensation or any right of return despite retaining the titles to their property and keys to their homes.”
This movie is sponsored by the Davis Interfaith Coalition for Peace and Justice in the Middle East. For more information, email George Rooks at [email protected]
