International House, Davis, and Senses Cultural are combining forces to present a free film festival in Davis on Tuesday, Oct. 23, showing films made by 16-year-olds in Mozambiqe and India.
The two short films to be shown are “Fire in our Hearts” (India, 27 minutes) and “Home is Where You Find It” (Mozambique, 27 minutes).
The international film project is the work of Holly Carter, founder of the nonprofit BYkids. BYkids pairs teens in Third World countries with professional filmmakers to produce kid-centered documentaries about their lives.
Senses Cultural is a Sacramento-based nonprofit that promotes the work of BYkids and organizations like it that are dedicated to improving the lives of women and children across the globe.
Carter is a New York-based journalist and filmmaker who will come to Davis for one night only. A reception for her will begin at 6:30 p.m. at I-House, 10 College Park. Tata Monfared, CEO of Senses Cultural, will introduce Carter, who is planning a documentary made by a teen in Afghanistan.
The movies will be shown at about 7:15 p.m. in the Community Room of International House.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Davis and Yolo County residents to see a unique and creative way that children are being empowered,” said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director of I-House.
The evening is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Monfared at [email protected] or visit the Senses Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/SensesCultural.
