From salsa dancing to stress, city classes run the gamut
The city of Davis offer many ways keep fit. The Community Services Department is accepting registration for the following classes:
* Beginning Salsa Dancing teaches basic footwork, dance positions, connections between partners, the basics of leading and following and musical interpretation. The class meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Feb. 14 to March 13 at Barbara’s Dancing Tonight Studio, 1921 Sycamore Lane in Davis.
No dance experience is required. The cost is $40 per person, not per couple.
* De-stress Your Life, a workshop meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Vetereans’ Memorial Center Game Room, 203 E. 14th St.,will help you understand stress and discover effective techniques to cope with stress when faced with tough life situations.
Instructor Mykim Tran will discuss how to keep life in balance, control anger and frustration, and examine various practical coping strategies to take control of your stress and life. The price is $25.
* A Weight Loss for Life workshop will help you lose and keep excess weight off for life. It meets from 5 to 7 p.m Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Veterans’ Memorial Center Game Room, 203 E. 14th St.
Instructor Mykim Tran will educate participants on why we gain weight, why diets do not work and how traditional diets can harm the body and mind. They’ll learn tips to stay focused on their weight loss goals and discover the true meaning of losing weight so they can keep it off for life.
The instructor will discuss various methods to promote healthy shopping, food preparation and cooking, as well as tips to avoid cravings. The workshop will conclude with participants learning effective methods of goal-setting to accomplish their weight loss goals for life.
The cost is $25, and a $6 materials fee is payable to the instructor on the first day of class.
* Fundamentals of Instructor Training introduces instructor candidates to the history, structure and activities of the American Red Cross and prepares instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross specialty courses to diverse populations.
The course, which costs $50, will meet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Community Pool Building, 201 E. 14th St. in Davis. The course also introduces instructor candidates to the policies and procedures of the American Red Cross to ensure course consistency, quality and appropriate training. A textbook is included.
