Researcher Karen Burney will offer basic tips on how to delve into family history at her presentation, “Beginning Genealogy,” from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27. Questions and refreshments will follow the presentation sponsored by the Davis Genealogy Club at the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St.
Designed for those interested in learning (or reviewing) the basics of tracing their ancestry, the program will cover the family history resources that are available and how to find census, birth, marriage, death and other key records. In addition, tips will be given for organizing the research.
Burney is a Sacramento genealogist with more than 20 years of experience. She teaches a variety of classes at the Sacramento Public Library: Beginning Genealogy, Census Records, Reunion Planning, Slave Research and more. Burney is a member of the National Genealogical Society and founder of The Roots Exchange and Education Society.
The Davis Genealogy Club normally meets at 1 p.m. on the last Monday of the month and hosts speakers and discussion groups to tackle family history problems. The club also will partner with the Stephens Branch Library to bring additional weekend and evening presentations to the public in October.
The genealogy library at the Davis Senior Center is open every Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. A club volunteer is available during these hours to help with questions.
