Golf and Mexican culture come together at the 11th annual Mexican Open Golf Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Paradise Valley Golf Course in Fairfield. Proceeds will go to Yolo Hospice and the Mexican Open Scholarship Award.

The Mexican Open Committee was created by Tony Cueva, his family and friends for the purpose of hosting a golf tournament that celebrates their love of golf and the Mexican culture.

“The golf tournament was popular immediately,” Cueva said. “We knew we wanted to have that popularity work for a local organization. Everybody I know has had a family member or someone they know use hospice. We knew the donation would make a difference at Yolo Hospice, and we had a great response from them since the beginning.”

The tournament is a four-person scramble, which includes green fees, cart, menudo at the golf course, lunch and beverages. Prizes are given for first-, second- and third-place foursomes, longest drive and closest-to-the-pin. Non-golfers who wish to attend the fiesta-luncheon at the Ulatis Community Center in Vacaville may buy a separate ticket.

“Yolo Hospice relies on these community groups and individuals who sponsor independent events on our behalf,” said Cynthia Wolff, director of access and outreach for Yolo Hospice. “We are grateful to Tony and the Mexican Open Committee for their commitment to Yolo Hospice and their personal dedication to helping others in their community.

Over the years, the Mexican Open Committee has donated more than $35,000 to Yolo Hospice, Wolff said.
