How can you help your child get ready for kindergarten? Come and find out at Grace Valley Christian Academy’s free kindergarten readiness parent seminar at 7 p.m. Thursday in the academy’s kindergarten classroom.
The seminar will provide parents with fun and creative activities to enhance their preschoolers’ beginning math and reading skills. A kindergarten instructor will offer tips to help children recognize letters and words, increase their reading comprehension, and learn basic math principles. Parents will receive free materials to help their children develop neat handwriting.
Information also will be available about GVCA’s kindergarten readiness summer program, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Thursdays, July 8-25. The cost is $150 per student. The program is designed for children entering kindergarten in either fall 2013 or fall 2014.
These classes provide training in early reading and math skills in a nurturing classroom setting. Students learn to recognize commonly used words, complete a preparatory handwriting program, and work on number recognition, counting and other early math concepts. Art projects and other activities reinforce these academic skills and foster creativity.
Grace Valley Christian Academy has a later kindergarten admission age cut-off than California public schools. Children who are 5 years old by Dec. 1, 2013, are eligible to begin kindergarten this fall at GVCA. Exceptions also may be made for accelerated students.
Educating students from kindergarten through ninth grade, Grace Valley Christian Academy was recently voted best private school in Yolo County. The school is at 27173 County Road 98 in rural West Davis and is now accepting applications for the 2013-14 school year.
