Poets Carroll Terra and Cynthia Lynville will read from their work at The Other Voice poetry group at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 18. The group is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Davis and meets in the church library, 27074 Patwin Road.

Refreshments and an open mike follow, so guests are invited to bring along a poem to share.

Terra was born in Wilmslow, County Cheshire, in northwest England but came to America via Paris where she taught English to four young children and was like a member of the family. There, she was introduced to the Binghams, an American family whose French governess had visa problems, so she came to Louisville, Ky., to live with them for a year.

At the end of the year she got a job with TWA and two years later transferred with four friends to San Francisco, where she met her future husband.

Many Davis residents may remember Terra from Patterson Travel Agency and later her theater, pub and countryside tours of England. What is not so well-known is that she has been writing poetry since she was 12 and is a master of rhyme. Her publication credits until now are with family and friends.

Linville is a Sacramento native who has lived in London, New York, San Francisco and outside Washington, D.C., but keeps coming back home to live in the San Joaquin Valley. A former pupil of Dennis Schmitz, she has taught in the English department at Sacramento State University for more than 10 years.

She is active in the local poetry scene, hosting readings for The Crocker, The Vox and The Sacramento Poetry Center. She served as poetry editor of Poetry Now in 2008-10 and continues to serve as managing editor of Convergence, an online journal and poetry and art (http://www.convergence-journal.com).

Linville regularly contributes her poetry to the Sacramento News and Review, the Song of the San Joaquin, the Ophidian, Medusa’s Kitchen and WTF and reads her work frequently.
