Hear! Here!, the Woodland chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America, has increased the number of preschools to receive hearing screening in 2011.
Testing will be done by trained personnel of the Center for Hearing Health, a nonprofit organization based in Auburn, which visits schools in specially equipped vans to identify hearing problems in children.
Hearing screening for preschool children is vital to their success in learning to listen, read and to learn language, according to Clare Childers of Hear! Here! A child with even slight hearing loss is unable to recognize his or her own disability and may be judged by others to be “quiet” and a slow learner.
Parents of children who fail the Hear! Here! screening test are advised to seek further testing to find the cause of the failure.
On April 27 and 28, through a donation from the Lions Clubs of Yolo County, five schools in Winters with a total of 126 children, and three schools in Esparto with a total of 48 children will be included in this year’s screening.
Additional funds from Soroptimist International of Davis, the Woodland Healthcare Foundation and Woodland Kiwanis will allow for screening at six preschools in Davis and one in Woodland, from April 28 through May 11.
