The Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6949 will host the community’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Davis Cemetery to remember local veterans who died in our nation’s service. The cemetery is at 820 Pole Line Road in East Davis.

The Yolo County Veterans Coalition also will host a Memorial Day ceremony, at 2 p.m. Monday at Monument Hill Memorial Park in Woodland. And a ceremony with military honors and songs to honor fallen heroes will take place at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.

Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor will be the keynote speaker at the Davis ceremony. A longtime Davis resident, Saylor has been a member of the Davis Board of Education, Davis City Council and Yolo County Board of Supervisors, representing District 2.

Pre-event patriotic music by the Davis Brass Ensemble will begin at 9:30 a.m. Also featured during the ceremony will be the Davis Children’s Choir and the Davis High School Madrigals, who will sing patriotic songs and songs of remembrance. The Davis Firefighters Local 3494 will provide the color guard and presentation of colors as well as a post-ceremony barbecue lunch.

Union president Bobby Weist said he and his comrades wish to show their gratitude to veterans and their families. Several firefighters also are veterans who have served in recent conflicts.

Davis VFW Commander Jay Brookman will lead attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance and professional singer Carol Kessler will sing the national anthem. The wreath will be laid by World War II veteran Ernie Head and his wife Marie.

In addition to the Memorial Day ceremony, the Davis VFW Post 6949 supports local school scholarships, Yolo County Military Families, Blue Star Families, flag replacement and retirements, UC Davis Picnic Day Activities, the Valentine Sweetheart Breakfast, activities with UCD student veterans and a community recognition night honoring local firefighters, police officers, dispatchers and teachers.

Those who wish to honor veterans killed in wartime by wearing a traditional Buddy Poppy can pick one up at several locations in Davis through Sunday. Buddy Poppies also will be available at the VFW information table at the Davis Cemetery on Monday.

Davis resident Francis Resta, a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army, will be the keynote speaker at Monday’s ceremony in Woodland. Resta is a member of VFW Post 6949 in Davis and recently took an Honor Flight to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Billy Wagster, a Marine and Air Force veteran who is Yolo County’s veterans services officer, will be the master of ceremonies.

Monument Hill Memorial Park is at 35036 County Road 22 in Woodland.

The Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road in Dixon, is the site of a 9 a.m. ceremony Monday featuring military honors and songs to honor service personnel who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
