A horse died Monday night after being struck by a car in a rural area southwest of Woodland, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Cindy Leal said the collision occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on northbound County Road 95 north of Road 25, where the horse ran in front of a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Blanca A. Vigil of Winters and resulted in major damage to the car.

Vigil went to Woodland Memorial Hospital with complaints of pain to her back, Leal said. A veterinarian was called to the scene and determined that the horse had to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.
