Human Rights Fellow to speak at UNA meeting

By From page A4 | October 14, 2012

The United Nations Association Davis will celebrate the 67th anniversary of the United Nations at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at International House, Davis, 10 College Park. The event program is focused on the work of the U.N. High Commission for Refugees and the U.N. Human Rights Council.

The speaker is Ryan Kaminski, the Leo Nevas Human Rights Fellow with the United Nations Association. Earlier this month, he was involved in a private briefing with Eileen Donahoe, the first United States permanent representative to the U.N. Human Rights Council.

With the ever-increasing number of refugees in today’s world, the work of the High Commission for Refugees and the Human Rights Council is critical, a news release said. Learning more about the functions and interaction of these United Nations agencies from someone who deals with them on a daily basis will help the audience realize the crucial role the U.N. plays in seeking solutions for the enormous human rights issues of this century.

UNA members and others interested are invited to a 3 p.m. reception at I-House to meet Kaminski, followed by the program at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free.
