I-House screens Bollywood film

By April 14, 2011

UC Davis Assistant Professor of Theater and Film Ajay Gehlawat will introduce a Bollywood film screening at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the International House, 10 College Park.

The film being screened is “Journey of a Woman,” shown in Hindi with English subtitles. Gehlawat is the author “Reframing Bollywood: Theories of Popular Hindi Cinema,” published in 2010.

“Bollywood has become a catchword today, in this era of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and ‘Monsoon Wedding,’ but a key question remains: What is Bollywood? Is it just one thing? Does it refer to a film style, a national cinema, a global phenomenon, or all three? The shifting role of the woman in these films becomes an interesting way of examining these changes,” Gehlawat said.

The event is free, and the public is invited.
