Israel Independence Week, a recognition of that nation’s 63rd birthday, will be celebrated by Congregation Bet Haverim on May 5-15 with a series of three events. All events are free and open to the public and will be held at CBH, 1715 Anderson Road in Davis.

The actual anniversary of the declaration of independence by modern Israel in 1948 is May 9.

The events are:

* “The Middle East Upheaval: How It Affects Israel”: Thursday, May 5, 7 p.m. The speaker will be Israel expert Emily Blanck, leadership membership director, East Bay and Sacramento Valley, for the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee. Sponsored by the Israel Affairs Committee of Congregation Bet Haverim, the event will take place in the North Classroom.

* “A Dynamic Israel Update with Akiva Tor”:Wednesday, May 11, 7 p.m. A native of the United States, Akiva Tor is counsel general for Israel in the Pacific Northwest. Co-sponsored by the Israel Matters Committee and the Israel Peace Alternatives Discussion Group, the program will take place in the Social Hall.

* “Israel Independence Celebration Barbecue”: Sunday, May 15, noon. The culmination of Israel Independence Week, the barbecue features hot dogs, falafels, salads, cotton candy and more, and is sponsored by the Israel Matters Committee.
