Israel’s consul general for the Pacific Northwest, Andy David, will talk about “Challenges Facing Israel” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Congregation Bet Haverim in Davis. Open to the public without charge, the program will take place at the congregation’s Social Hall, 1715 Anderson Road.

David will cover a wide scope of issues, including prospects for Mideast peace, Israeli politics post-election and the impact of President Obama’s recent visit. He is expected to pay particular attention to the Iranian nuclear threat and the civil war in Syria and also to Israel’s relations to the Palestinians and its neighboring Arab countries.

Before his appointment as consul general to the Pacific Northwest in August 2012, David served in a variety of posts in Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 14 years. He worked on relations with Asian nations and was deputy head of the missions in Azerbaijan and Hong Kong. In 2004-08 he was deputy consul general in Chicago and the Midwest.

He has lectured at many universities in Israel and in the United States, and he pioneered a new cooperation initiative by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the field of homeland security that involved federal, state and local agencies in this country.

Born in Romania, David immigrated at the age of 2 with his family to Israel. He was trained as a dentist, earning a doctor of dental medicine and two other degrees from Jerusalem’s Hebrew University.

David spent three years in the Israeli Air Force and in the Ministry of Defense’s Armament Development Authority. He is a graduate of the Executive Combating Terrorism program at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.
