Judicial candidates’ forum slated at library

By From page A9 | March 23, 2014

Four candidates for the Yolo Superior Court bench will participate in a public forum from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 23, in the Blanchard Room at the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. in Davis. The event is co-sponsored by the Vanguard Court Watch and Davis Media Access, which will record and rebroadcast it at a later date.

Yolo Superior Court Commissioner Janene Beronio, attorney John Brennan, Deputy Attorney General Larenda Delaini and Sacramento family law attorney Rick Cohen are candidates in the race to replace Judge Stephen Mock, who has announced his retirement after 24 years on the bench.

The format will allow the judicial candidates to ask each other pre-selected questions and then will allow the audience about 30 minutes to ask their own questions of the candidates. These questions will be screened to ensure they meet stringent judicial canon requirements.

The last open and contested judicial seat was in 1990, when Mock was elected. If no candidate reaches the 50 percent threshold for votes in June, the top two vote-getters will advance to the November general election.
