The Grain to Bread program allows children to experience the entire process that goes into making bread. They learn about harvesting and threshing the grain, which doesn't look very much like bread. Courtesy photo
Davis Farm to School and Yolo Farm to Fork are providing opportunities for children and their families to experience the art of bread-making and the satisfaction of eating something they created themselves.
Grain to Bread children’s activities are being celebrated in the midst of Food Literacy Month in September and National Farm to School Month in October.
The hands-on activity begins with locally grown wheat harvested from Full Belly Farm and takes children through the steps of bread-making — threshing, winnowing and grinding grain, then kneading dough, and baking pizza in a wood-fired oven provided by Caffé Italia.
Upcoming Grain to Bread activities include:
* 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, at Capay Crush, sponsored by Capay Organic and Farm Fresh to You at 23808 State Highway 16 in Capay;
