Large field of candidates contending for school board seats

By From page A2 | August 15, 2014

The Nov. 4 election will feature an unusual contest in the Davis school board race, with an unusually large field of seven candidates seeking three open seats, with no incumbents in the field.

A check of the Yolo County Elections Department’s online archive — which includes elections as far back as 1997 — indicated that there have been several school board elections with as many as five candidates contending.

The seven candidates (listed in the order in which they filed candidacy papers) are Barbara Archer, Bob Poppenga, Madhavi Sunder, Chuck Rairdan, Tom Adams, Jose Granda and Mike Nolan. They are seeking the school board seats currently held by Sheila Allen, Gina Daleiden and Tim Taylor — two-term incumbents who did not seek re-election.

Incumbent school board trustee Alan Fernandes — who was appointed in May to fill an unexpired term — was the only candidate to file for a two-year seat on the school board. Since Fernandes is unopposed for that seat, his name will not appear on the ballot.
