‘Let’s Paint Poppies!’ with watercolorist Jan Foss

By From page A5 | January 22, 2012

The Davis Art Center welcomes back one of its most popular art instructors, watercolorist Jan Foss, to teach a three-day workshop Jan 27-29.

In “Let’s Paint Poppies!,” students will use different techniques to capture the beauty of three types of poppies.

The first lesson focuses on painting the red Oriental poppy one petal at a time, with an emphasis on color mixing. On day two, students will paint Icelandic poppies in the wet-in-wet style using negative painting.

On the final day, students will use masking fluid and a spray bottle to create texture in a landscape painting of California poppies.

The class is suitable for beginning and experienced painters, 18 and older, and costs $135 ($125 for Davis Art Center members).

Classes will take place at the Art Center, 1919 F St., from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29.

Register online at www.davisartcenter.org or by calling (530) 756-4100.

Foss, who finds inspiration in the landscapes surrounding her Lake Tahoe home, has worked in watercolors for 24 years and is known for her soft, delicate floral paintings.
