Libraries showcase Women’s History Month
Local residents are invited to learn more about Women’s History Month by visiting branches of the Yolo County Library this month:
* Each branch will feature photographs highlighting notable Yolo County women. Books on the theme “Women Inspiring Innovation through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics” also will be on display.
* Davis historian jesikah maria ross, director of the Art of Regional Change Program at UC Davis and project coordinator of Restore/Restory: A People’s History of the Cache Creek Nature Preserve, will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 14, at the Turner Community Library, 1212 Merkley Ave. in West Sacramento.
Ross has developed an interactive website telling the stories of California’s peoples, traditions and relations to the land. She will give a general overview of the project and focus her talk on the woman she interviewed. She’ll also make available three iPad stations for an interactive learning experience.
* Elizabeth Monroe, founder and president of the Greater Capay Historical Society, will give a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the Stephens Branch Library, 315 E. 14th St. in Davis. A retired educator who served as a teacher and principal for many years, she also has published several newsletters on the history of Capay and its people.
Monroe is descended from the Duncan and Monroe families in Yolo County, and has documented the life of her grandfather, a sheriff for whom the Yolo County Jail is dedicated. Monroe will speak about the California Prohibition and suffrage era when Yolo County women fought for the right to vote while closing bars in Woodland.
