A countywide crackdown on drunken drivers during the winter holidays ended with 37 people under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, officials with Yolo County’s “Avoid the 8″ task force announced Wednesday.
Between 12:04 a.m. Dec. 14 and midnight Tuesday, officers representing eight Yolo County law-enforcement agencies made the arrests through sobriety and driver’s license checkpoints, saturation patrols and routine patrols, Davis police Sgt. Rod Rifredi said in a news release. Seven of the arrests stemmed from officers who specifically were deployed for DUI enforcement.
Rifredi said the Avoid task force will conduct additional operations throughout the county during Super Bowl Sunday in February, and again for local St Patrick’s Day festivities in March. Authorities encourage all motorists to call 911 if they encounter an impaired driver.
Funding for the Avoid program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
