Ruby Sanchez of Albuquerque, N.M., celebrated her 100th birthday Saturday. A former Davis resident, she was integral in helping her son Dick open de Luna Jewelers in 1968 at Second and E streets in downtown Davis.

“Ruby was a very important employee,” Luna said in an email. “She was an ambassador, salesperson, cook, janitor, curator and expert gift wrapper.”

Ruby was born in Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico and is fluent in the Towa language. Her hobbies include cooking for her family and friends, and dancing. She is a devout Catholic and an expert in canning fruit, making jelly and praying the rosary.
