August is the height of the melon season in Yolo County, and the fruit will be celebrated for the first time at this year’s Village Feast, which takes place Saturday in Central Park.
Nine different types of melons will be showcased and served to guests during a noon to 1 p.m. aperitif hour, along with other tasty morsels.
Harris Moran Seed Co. donated the melons, Caffé Italia is preparing them for tastings and members of the Future Farmers of America chapter at Davis High School will be serving them. Lunch will then be served family-style by Buckhorn Catering from 1 to 3 p.m. Each guest will leave the feast with their own whole melon to enjoy at home.
Village Feast tickets will be available for $75 each until Wednesday at noon at the Davis Food Co-op, 620 G St., or by calling (530) 753-2647. Limited tickets will be available at the feast for $85. Caron McMillan is the raffle winner of ticket #36 for two free tickets to the feast.
Visit the Davis Farm to School website, http://www.davisfarmtoschool.org, to view the wide array of silent auction items being offered at the feast.
Money from the fundraiser goes to support farm-to-school projects, including purchasing local and seasonal produce for school lunches, continuing the recycling programs at the schools and supporting gardens with matching $250 and $500 grants at the school sites.
