Magnum, a Davis dog, won the herding group competition on Aug. 5 at the Richmond Dog Fanciers Association shows in Dixon.

Magnum is a Canaan dog, a breed native to Israel. He has tied or broken every breed record, and has been recognized as the Canaan dog breed winner at the Westminster Kennel Club and American Kennel Club National Championship Dog Show for the past three years.

His owners are Pamela Rosman and Richard Vulliet, a UC Davis professor of veterinary medicine, and he lives in Stonegate.

Kaitryn E. Ronning of Woodland was recently inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta freshman honor society at Susquehanna University.

Ronning, a sophomore majoring in biology and music, is a 2011 graduate of Davis High School.

The national freshman honor society encourages superior scholastic achievement among students during their first year in institutions of higher education, promotes intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning, and assists students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their unique roles in society. The Susquehanna chapter was established in 1976.

Sergio Aguilar-Gaxiola, director of the UC Davis Center for Reducing Health Disparities, has been appointed by state Senate Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg to co-chair a task force to investigate the equitable distribution of autism services to diverse communities in California.

Established by the UC Davis Office of Research earlier this year, the new Research Investments in Sciences and Engineering program has awarded a total of $10 million to support 12 research projects over the next three years. Five projects are led by UC Davis Health System faculty.

Satya Dandekar, professor and chair of medical microbiology and immunology, is leading research on “Protecting the Fragile Intestine: Integrating Microbiota and Muscosal Health.”

Jay Han, an associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, is directing research to develop wireless sensor and mobile health (mHealth) technologies to empower individuals with chronic diseases. The project initially will focus on the use of smartphones to assess a patient’s medical status, which has potential applications for conducting e-house calls and other interactions between patients and caregivers.

Kimberley McAllister, professor of neurology at the School of Medicine and of neurobiology, physiology and behavior at the Center for Neuroscience, is leading studies investigating the neuroimmunological basis of schizophrenia. Dubbed I-CAN SZ, the project will test the idea that maternal infection during pregnancy contributes to the development of schizophrenia.

Edward Pugh, a professor in the departments of physiology and membrane biology and of cell biology and human anatomy, is leading the UC Davis Eye-Pod project, which will employ novel adaptive optics imaging of single cells in the eyes of living animals under normal, pathogenic and regenerative conditions.

Simon Cherry, professor of biomedical engineering and radiology, is working to build the infrastructure and expertise for a UC Davis Center for Translational Molecular Imaging. The center will translate novel molecular imaging agents and new imaging devices for clinical research studies.

Other projects led by faculty with appointments on the UC Davis campus include collaborations with UC Davis Health System specialists.

Katherine Ferrara in the department of biomedical engineering has established a Center for Content Rich Evaluation of Therapeutic Efficacy to address the critical need for new screening tools for cancer therapeutics.

Fu-Tong Liu, professor of dermatology and project leader Kwan Liu Ma in the computer science department are collaborating to establish the UC Davis Center for Visualization.
The services include assessment and diagnosis, counseling, genetic counseling, early intervention services and the purchase of direct services included in consumers’ individual program plan.

Matthew Van Hook of Davis has been named to Eckerd College’s dean’s list for the spring 2012 semester. The dean’s list includes students who completed at least four courses with a grade-point average of 3.75. Van Hook is majoring in physics.

Eckerd College, in St. Petersburg, Fla., is a pioneer of innovation-developing programs that have been adopted nationwide.
