University Farm Circle will get the new academic year off to an energized start by inviting new and prospective members to a Newcomers Coffee from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the home of Janine Mozée, 1347 Cassel Lane in Davis.

This informal coffee will help women of all ages meet new friends and learn more about this Davis social organization and its programs and activities. The University Farm Circle holds numerous programs throughout the year, as well as sections devoted to special interests.

UFC is the oldest support group of UC Davis, with a long tradition of welcoming women to the community and its organization. Founded in 1914, when UCD was still the University Farm, it provided programs, activities and support for university women. Today, membership in UFC is open to anyone supportive of UCD and includes more than 400 members.

Those who are new to the area or new to UFC are invited to join Newcomers. The Newcomers co-chairs this year are Sheila Beyer and Mozée, and they are enthusiastic about special Newcomers activities that are planned for small groups to encourage interaction between new and continuing members, as well as provide information about the campus, community and UFC.

This group will help members make connections when they attend Newcomers activities, as well as UFC programs and interest sections open to all members.

Additional Newcomers activities in the fall include a picnic at the Bee Garden in October and a walking tour of downtown Davis in November. In January, the group will take a tour of the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on campus.

March will feature a “Make Your Own Pizza and Salad Lunch,” and there will be a Wine and Appetizer Party in April that includes spouses/partners. In May, the group will take a tour of the Woodland Opera House, followed by lunch and shopping in Woodland.

The group will finish off the year of activities by dining with new friends and spouses/partners at a Davis or surrounding community’s restaurant.

Newcomers are encouraged to attend University Farm Circle programs and sections, which begin in October with the annual UFC fall tea, planned for 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Buehler Alumni Center on campus. All are welcome to come to the tea to learn more about — and sign up for — UFC programs and sections. The highlight of the tea is the presentation of UFC scholarships to UCD students.

Other fall UFC programs include a Food and History Walk in midtown Sacramento, a packing program, a trip to San Francisco for holiday shopping, and the annual Candlelight Dinner. In addition, this year UFC is holding its Holiday Home Tour on Dec. 9, featuring tours of six Davis homes.

Programs in 2013 will include a trip to the Crocker Art Gallery in Sacramento, a women’s health program on diet and nutrition, an “Oldies Night” that includes spouses and guests, a bus trip to Lodi wineries and the annual spring luncheon.

For more information about the Newcomers Coffee, call Beyer at (530) 231-5059 or Mozée at (530) 204-7820. To learn more about University Farm Circle, visit ufcdavis.org.
