Susan was fleeing extreme domestic violence with her 5-year-old child. The abuse was so bad, she contemplated ending it once and for all by taking her life … and the life of her child.
A Davis resident noticed the mother in a local shopping center parking lot and decided to intervene. That’s when Susan revealed her distress and plan.
Because of all the publicity surrounding last year’s threatened closure, the passerby knew about the Yolo Crisis Nursery. Within moments, the nursery was called and trained staff members were dispatched to surround the family with support.
They are safe. They are alive. They are proof of what we know: The nursery saves families, and it saves lives.
In the weeks since this incident, we’ve never been clearer about our mission and gratitude for being able to continue these vital services. Without a doubt, this story might have had a much different result had it not been for the generosity and heart of our community.
We need you this year, too.
Going forward, we must raise $300,000 a year to keep the nursery afloat, including $100,000 from local givers like you and me.
This year’s fundraising campaign is again called One Child — One Day.
Why?
Because we hope you will give $50, the average cost of providing one day of emergency respite care for one child.
The campaign is happening now during Child Abuse Prevention Month and runs through June 21, Father’s Day.

Last year’s efforts were incredible. Lemonade stands, bake sales, neighborhood gatherings and business proceeds days were initiated by many of you making survival possible, right down to the penny.
Our operations are efficient, locally controlled, and available to all Yolo County residents. Whether you can give 50 cents, $50, or $500 and up, we ask that you do.
After all, the lives we rescue are the lives you save.
