The Outa Sight! Group, of visually impaired and blind volunteers, has been meeting in Woodland for more than 27 years to provide mutual support. The group’s goals are to identify and share resources, learn independent living skills that enhance members’ lives, perform community service projects and advocate for disability rights.
Two self-help meetings are planned each month. Past speakers have included ophthalmologists and other experts in fields relevant for the visually impaired and blind, community leaders, resource specialists and optical-aid sales representatives.
All Outa Sight! Group coordinators are volunteers. Funds for our programs and services come from one annual fundraiser — the White Cane Dinner, which this year takes place Oct. 13 at the Elks Lodge in Woodland.
Current programs and services include bi-monthly self-help groups; a monthly newsletter and telephone tree; partnership with the Sacramento Society for the Blind; instruction in cane travel and Braille; magnifier demonstration programs; audible book and descriptive video lending libraries; enlarged-print restaurant menu program; provision of intersection “beepers” in Woodland (for example, at Second and Main streets and at Ashley and Main streets); taxi vouchers; disbursement of canes and optical aids; and an annual Christmas party.
All are welcome at the meetings, which take place on the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Woodland Community and Senior Center, 2001 East St. For more information, call Marion at (530) 662-9579 or Margie at (530) 662-9521.
