By From page A4 | November 06, 2012

John Panaretos, former Greek deputy minister of education, lifelong learning and religious affairs, will discuss “Public Universities at a Time of Austerity and Crisis: Some Lessons from Greece,” at 4 p.m. Wednesday. His talk will be in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center at UC Davis.

Panaretos will speak as part of the Chancellor’s Colloquium Distinguished Speaker Series, hosted by Chancellor Linda Katehi. Following the talk, a question-and-answer session will be moderated by Ralph J. Hexter, UCD provost and executive vice chancellor. The event is free and open to the public.

Panaretos served as a Greek deputy minister from 2009 to 2011. He is now professor of probability and statistics at the Athens University of Economics and Business. He has been a visiting professor at UC Berkeley and Stanford University and is a member of the Scientific Council of the Greek Parliament, and director of the Institute of Statistical Documentation Research and Analysis in Greece.
