Pence hosts water tank art talk

By From page A4 | November 17, 2011

Artists Sofia Lacin and Hennessey Christophel will give a presentation on the east area water tank art installation titled “Same Sun” from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Pence Gallery, 212 D St. Admission is free.

Attendees will learn about the inspiration for this project as well as its challenges, and will have an opportunity to ask questions of city staff members and the artists. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Lacin and Christophel, business partners and friends since high school, won a $75,000 city grant last fall to paint a mural on the 35-foot-tall, 4 million-gallon water tank in East Davis. Because the tank faces Interstate 80, city officials wanted it to be an eye-catching signature that would remind commuters of everything Davis is and has to offer.

The tank will feature shadows — cast by the sculptures — moving against a golden-hued backdrop. Once a year, on the summer solstice, the shadows will fall into place as the missing letters to the Latin phrase painted on the tank: “Sol omnibus lucet,” which means “The sun shines upon us all.”
