Poetry comes to life through dance

By From page A9 | February 09, 2012

The Pamela Trokanski Dance Theatre and The Third Stage Dance Company are pleased to present, in collaboration with Davis Poet Laureate Allegra Silberstein, “Entering,” a performance of poetry reading and dance.

The collaborative venture will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Pamela Trokanski Dance Workshop’s in-house theater, 2720 Del Rio Place in Davis.

“Entering” is the culmination of one of Silberstein’s dreams, a project funded by the city of Davis’ Arts Contract Program.

She writes: “One of my ideas was to publish a book of poems about Davis by people who live in Davis now or were connected to Davis in the past. It seemed to me that through poetry we may enter the soul of the city.

“The Davis Enterprise gave a lot of publicity to this project and the response was overwhelming with many fine poems as various in theme and thoughts as the people who live in Davis. In a leap of faith, or perhaps foolhardiness, my plan for a 60-page book became a book of 100 pages.

“… For me, combining the art forms of dance and poems is very exciting,” Silberstein continued. “The spoken word has a music deeper than the words themselves that the dancers will respond to in their movement.”

Sunday’s program is free but donations will be accepted with gratitude. The Davis Poetry Anthology, “Entering,” and Silberstein’s chapbook of poetry, “In the Folds,” will be available for purchase.

The afternoon will include readings by several of the writers who contributed poems to the book, as well as several read by Silberstein. For more information, call (530) 756-3949.
