The Prytanean Honor Society and local Prytanean alumnae at UC Davis donated 28 hand-made red felt stockings for the children staying at the Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Center’s battered women’s shelter in Yolo County during the holidays.
The stockings were crafted by the Prytanean alumnae members, decorated by the active members at UCD, and filled with wrapped candy, lip gloss, toothbrush, toothpaste, socks and gloves. A small stuffed animal topped each stocking.
A discount from CVS/pharmacy made the project possible, said Sharon Rose of Davis, who chaired the project.
Founded at UC Berkeley in 1901, the Prytanean Honor Society is the oldest women’s honor society in the United States, Rose said. The UCD chapter was founded in 1952.
“Most people aren’t homeless by choice. Some are made homeless by courage,” said Lynnette Irlmeier, executive director of SADVC. “The holidays can be very difficult for our homeless families in transition, especially for the children. We are all very grateful for this gesture of kindness, compassion and support.”
