The North Davis Riparian Greenbelt Project team will soon begin planning environmental education areas along the North Davis channel between Senda Nueva Park and F Street. The project team invites interested community members to join them for a planning meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, in the Club Room at the Veterans’ Memorial Center, 203 E. 14th St. in Davis.
Funding for the project is provided by the Strategic Growth Council’s Urban Greening Program, funded by the voters of California via Proposition 84. The meeting will begin the planning process for the second component of a project involving the channel and greenbelt.
Stephen McCord of McCord Environmental, project manager, notes that public participation in planning habitat elements for the channel was high and that he expects similar community involvement in this second component.
“The first planning element for this two-part project involved a detailed planting plan for over a mile of channel,” he said. “We received hundreds of comments from the community, and the resulting plan was certainly improved by that input.
“This second component of the project is smaller in scale, but we still hope to have passionate community members contributing their ideas for making the greenbelt a more welcoming, educational area where people can appreciate nature nearby.”
The Aug. 19 meeting will be the first in a series of opportunities for the community to provide guidance to planners regarding the landscaping and environmental education features along the channel. Additional opportunities to interact with the planning team will be announced via Putah Creek Council’s website (www.putahcreekcouncil.org), and on www.daviswiki.org.
