Retailers, landfill accept leftover paint for recycling
Recycling leftover paint in California just got more convenient with the kickoff of California’s Paint Stewardship Program and the participation of 350 retail collection locations throughout the state.
Yolo County paint retail stores participating in the program and now taking back paint for recycling are Sherwin-Williams, 1392 E. Main St., Suite A, in Woodland and Kelly Moore Paints, 538 N. East St. Suite A in Woodland and 831 Harbor Blvd. in West Sacramento.
Leftover paint represents 40 to 60 percent of all household hazardous waste collected at public facilities, and costs an estimated $21 million each year for the management and proper disposal for local governments, a county spokeswoman said. As a result, Assembly Bill 1343 established the Paint Stewardship Program requiring paint manufactures to develop a take-back system for leftover paint from households and commercial consumers.
PaintCare, a nonprofit organization, was created to administer the program, including arranging for recycling and proper disposal of unused paint. Additionally, a 75 cents-per-gallon container recovery fee was established, which will be applied to the purchase price of paint, and paid to PaintCare to fund the program.
Paint also may be recycled at the Yolo County Central Landfill, 44090 County Road 28H, every Friday and Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
To minimize the need to recycle extra paint, consumers can:
* Take care to buy the correct amount of paint for the project;
* Properly store paint to keep it fresh;
* Use up leftover paint whenever possible; and
* Donate leftover pain to a charitable organization for their use.
