The University Retirement Community resembles a beehive more than a retirement home this week. All hands are on deck, staff and residents alike, preparing for Saturday’s welcome onslaught of bargain hunters.
On Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., hundreds of buyers will descend on the Shasta Drive community in search of a good deal. URC residents are spending the week making sure that they will find what they want.
All items for sale have been collected over the past year from residents moving in, changing apartments or from their children. This past week has been devoted to unpacking the storage spaces, opening the boxes, sorting, organizing and pricing the thousands of items that will be available to the public on Saturday.
The wares include almost anything you can imagine from furniture — desks, tables, sofas, chairs, bookcases, lamps, etc., as well as large and small appliances, most in like-new condition (refrigerators, stoves, microwaves, washers and dryers, dishwashers, even radios, toasters, waffle irons). The other departments include linens, housewares, china, glass, collectibles, fine art, books and DVDs, and jewelry. These even is a miscellaneous table for those items that defeat the sorting process.
The University Retirement Community’s charitable foundation and the Yolo Wayfarer Center benefit from the purchases. Local delivery of large items may be arranged for a reasonable fee. Food and cold drinks are available for purchase. All items are sold as is, and paid in cash or by check.
URC is at the intersection of Shasta Drive and West Covell Boulevard, just west of Highway 113. Parking is available at Sutter Hospital across Covell Boulevard from URC.
