Jeff, the description you give of is not at all what happened. What I remember is that a fight broke out between two groups of boys after a long period of bullying and building tension towards a group of East Asian immigrant students at DHS. During the fight Pierman went to get the knife from his car and was waving it around. Someone jumped on his back, arms circling his neck, at the same time that Thong came at him from the front. As Pierman lifted his hands in response to the person on his back, the knife plunged upward into Thong and he was mortally injured. This explains the manslaughter charge instead of murder. We need to remember this tragedy and the conditions that allowed this to occur, but we need to remember it accurately.

Thong was in my math class, my senior year of 1983. He was a very quiet but kind young man. What happened to him was an ultimate tragedy. I remember it like it was yesterday. I pray continuous comfort for his family. Davis needs to admit that there is a racial problem and intolerance problem in the city. It’s been there, personally, since I was in the 3rd grade. I could tell you stories of how I was mistreated. Davis you need to admit that you have gangs too. Come out of that Liberal, Conservative, book mentality sense and learn how to truly appreciate and tolerate each other. Go learn about the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama. I still love my hometown, but it needs help. My three cents.
