Local residents who want to provide school supplies for children in need have two ways to do so: through the Davis Police Department and at the offices of six local Edward Jones financial services advisers.

The Davis Police Department is gearing up for its seventh annual “Pack the Patrol Car” fundraiser school-supply drive. From now through Friday, Aug. 16, donations may be dropped off at the department, 2600 Fifth St., between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

Donors are asked to purchase a backpack and fill it with the following basic supplies: one three-ring binder, one package of filler paper, one package of five-tab insert dividers, two spiral notebooks, two pocket folders, a pencil pouch, 12-pack of No. 2 pencils (mechanical or regular), 12-pack of Crayola basic colored pencils, 24 pack of Crayola basic color crayons, erasers, three-pack of glue sticks, a ruler, scissors (small or medium size), highlighters, a calculator, small pencil sharpener and one package of pens (blue or black).

Patrol officers will deliver the filled backpacks to the elementary, junior high and high schools on their beats prior to the start of the school year, Petersen said. School staff members then will determine the families most in need and present the students with their new backpacks.

Items needed include backpacks for junior high students (no red or blue); flash drives; paper — printer, college-ruled lined and construction; notebooks; No. 2 pencils; scientific and regular calculators; tape; erasers; Post-Its; 2- and 3-inch, three-ring white binders; subject dividers; freezer Zip-loc bags; tissues; staplers; and rulers.
