Qualifying exams for Academic Talent Search classes to be offered this summer at Sacramento State University begin this week.

The program provides academically challenging, fast-paced courses to motivated fourth- through ninth-grade students. Fourth- and fifth-graders have their choice of 40 classes offered in one-week sessions. Last year, each class cost $298; financial aid is available.

Sixth- through ninth-graders have a choice of 80 classes in one-, three- and five-week sessions. Students have the opportunity to accelerate their learning in traditional subjects like mathematics and to explore new topics that are not always available in regular school. Last summer, fees ranged from $138 to $419 depending on the length of the course. Again, financial aid is available.

Students are advised to take the qualifying exam at their neighborhood school, but if they have a schedule conflict, they can register for any session as long as registration is done in advance.

Registration forms are available at the school sites where tests are administered or from the GATE program office at the Davis school district office, 526 B St. Forms should be submitted to the school office before the test date to reserve a space.

A $15 fee should be brought on the test day, in cash or in a check payable to “ATS.” Inquiries about fee waivers may be directed to the school sites or to the district office.

The testing schedule is:

* Wednesday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Room D-20 at Willett Elementary, 1207 Sycamore Lane;

* Thursday, Feb. 7, from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. at Holmes Junior High, 1220 Drexel Drive;

* Thursday, Feb. 7, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Montgomery Elementary, 1441 Danbury St.;

* Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Room H-44 at Pioneer Elementary, 5215 Hamel St.;

* Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. at Korematsu Elementary, 3100 Loyola Drive; and

* Wednesday, March 13, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Room E-3 at North Davis Elementary, 555 E. 14th St.
