How can you help your child get ready for kindergarten? Come and find out at Grace Valley Christian Academy’s free kindergarten readiness parent seminar at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in the academy’s kindergarten classroom.

The seminar will provide parents with fun and creative activities to enhance their preschoolers’ beginning math and reading skills. A kindergarten instructor will offer tips to help children recognize letters and words, increase their reading comprehension, and learn basic math principles.

Parents also will receive free materials to help their children develop neat handwriting.

Information will be available about GVCA’s kindergarten readiness summer program, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon Mondays through Thursdays, July 9-26. The cost is $150 per student. The program is designed for children entering kindergarten in either fall 2012 or fall 2013.

These classes provide training in early reading and math skills in a nurturing classroom setting. Students learn to recognize commonly used words, complete a preparatory handwriting program, and work on number recognition, counting and other early math concepts. Art projects and other activities reinforce these academic skills and foster creativity.

Grace Valley Christian Academy has a later kindergarten admission age cut-off than California public schools. Children who are 5 years old by Dec. 1, 2012, are eligible to begin kindergarten this year at GVCA. Exceptions also may be made for accelerated students.

Grace Valley Christian Academy, which educates students in grades kindergarten through nine, is at 27173 County Road 98 in rural West Davis. For more information, or to sign up for the parent seminar and/or the summer program, call (530) 758-6590 or visit www.gracevalley.org/gvca.

Applications are being accepted for the 2012-13 school year.
