Educator and longtime Davis resident Shelton Yip has filed candidacy papers for the seat on the Yolo County Board of Education being vacated by Joseph Thomson, who announced last week he would not seek another term.
For the past two years, Yip has served as the Special Education Local Plan Area director with the Napa County Office of Education. Prior to his job in Napa, Yip was a SELPA administrator with the Sacramento City Unified School District for nine years, and before that, he served in the Dixon Unified School district as an administrator in student services and pupil personnel services.
Yip also has held positions as a teacher, school counselor and principal.
He told The Enterprise that he moved to Davis as a UC Davis student in 1970 “and never left.” Yip earned a bachelor’s degree in art and a teaching credential at UCD, and a master’s degree in counseling and pupil services at Sacramento State.
He raised two children, now adults, who attended the Davis public schools. For several years, he was the girls varsity soccer coach at Davis High School.
Yip said he decided to run for the Yolo County Board of Education after reading in the newspaper that Thomson would be stepping down after 18 years as a trustee. Yip said he consulted with a number of friends and colleagues and decided to take out candidacy papers.
“I have always been an advocate for children, and I thought this would be an opportunity to give back to the community and be a part of the educational process,” Yip said. “These are difficult times for education, and we need to have a clear voice supporting our children at the local, state and federal level.”
The filing period for candidates continues through Aug. 15; prospective candidates can pick up papers at the Yolo County Elections Department in Room B-05 at the County Administration Building, 625 Court St. in Woodland.
