Scouts help STEAC

By March 1, 2011

Christian Blair gets help from fellow Cub Scouts Matthew Wong and Thomas Nishikawa along with Boy Scout Ryan Nishikawa as they help organize the Short-Term Emergency Aid Committee’s food closet. The Scouts and their parents — about 400 of them — will pick up donations of canned goods from local residents’ doorsteps starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. Residents are invited to participate by putting out canned goods and other nonperishable foods to help feed hungry local families. Like every nonprofit agency in the country, STEAC has seen a steady increase in demand for food, says board president Cass Sylvia. “Many of the families that are now coming in have never had to ask for assistance before,” she says. “This is why the Boy Scout drive is so important to us. Without this kind of community support, it would be very difficult for us to continue our mission.” For more information, or if your donation is not picked up, call STEAC at 758-8435.
