See electric gliders fly Saturday

Community members are invited to attend two upcoming Sacramento Valley Soaring Society glider events.

The first is Saturday and features electric gliders. They launch en masse using their electric motors, which automatically shut off at 200 meters, then hunt for thermals to stay aloft. Saturday, June 9, features a thermal duration event, in which gliders are launched with a winch.

Both Saturdays see radio-control gliders, some with 14-foot wingspans, make precision target landings after their flights.

Both events run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grasslands Park, at the corner of Mace Boulevard and Tremont Road about 3 miles south of Davis. Parking and admission are free and refreshments will be available for purchase.
