Seed-saving workshop planned Thursday

By From page A3 | July 31, 2013

The Davis Permaculture Guild will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Conference Room at the Davis Food Co-op, 620 G St. This is a free group for people interested in organic gardening, sustainable living and giving surplus back to community.

For this month’s gathering, Mélanie Lataste of the Davis Seed Savers Alliance will lead a tomato-tasting, a seed-saving workshop using the fermenting method, a small seed swap and an origami seed envelope session. She will bring a sample from the Davis Seed Library.

“Bring seeds if you want to make a donation,” a news release said. “You are welcome to check out some seeds. Bring your favorite heirloom tomato, a small glass jar with lid, your precious seeds and a story you would like to share.”

Humans have been saving seeds for thousands of years and were able to create a huge diversity of crops from wild plant species by carefully selecting the seeds from plants that had desirable characteristics.
