The fatality rates for aged drivers may have fallen more than that of younger motorists, but it is still substantially higher.

Since many of the deaths caused by elderly motorists were to themselves, the improvements in passenger compartment safety (air bags and such) is clearly a huge factor in this drop. However, from a public safety standpoint, I want to know what has happened to the rate at which these elderly motorists are killing pedestrians and cyclists. Just because they and other motorists are better protected from their diminished skills and perception does not make them safe to drive on roads that are shared by uncaged humans.
