Co-op serves up some holiday spirit

Here’s a recipe for community: Take a delicious home-cooked dinner, serve it up with smiles and good cheer, and share it with several hundred of your closest friends and neighbors. Mix in some rollickin’ tunes, and you have the 28th annual Christmas Eve Holiday Meal, which took place Tuesday at the Veterans’ Memorial Center.

The local tradition is organized by the Davis Food Co-op and sponsored by the generous donations of community groups, area businesses, Co-op suppliers, Co-op shoppers and guests at the meal. An estimated 600 people — including students, senior citizens and community members who are far from their families — were served a traditional or vegan holiday meal.

The fun began in mid-afternoon with coffee and snacks for early arrivers and the army of volunteers who pull off the big event. And the good cheer continued until the last crumb was swept and pot was washed.

Santa Claus certainly had lots of good little boys and girls (and men and women) in Davis on his Christmas Eve visitation list.
