Marine veteran Helen Shor graduated from Davis High School in 2004. By the end of that year she was a Marine, studying at the Defensive Language Institute in Monterey. She studied Arabic for two years, and in 2007 she was deployed to Iraq. By 2009, she had completed her third tour there.

Upon her return to the United States, Shor was accepted to Colombia University in New York, where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Middle East, South Asian and African studies in June 2012. She will continue her studies at Columbia, working on her master’s degree in international affairs, focusing on international security policy.

“The veterans group on campus provided me with an instant social network that has proved invaluable through my time at Columbia University,” Shor says. “Veteran students and alumni have provided academic and vocational advice. … Beyond that, the veterans group has provided me with a network of friends who can truly relate to my past experiences.”
