Julia Serat, a Woodland resident and photographer at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California, had three of her photos selected for display in a national exhibit organized by the Children’s Hospital Association.
The exhibit features images of brave patients, supportive families and compassionate health care providers. It celebrates the commitment to the health of all children shared by children’s hospitals throughout America and showcases what makes children’s hospitals unique.
“Photography has the power to move us, as it captures both ordinary and extraordinary moments that may otherwise pass unremarkably,” Serat said in a news release. “These images reflect the comprehensive care given by all members of our Shriners Hospital team, helping patients achieve successful moments despite their circumstances or challenges.
“It is my privilege to share these images through the photo exhibit, so that others may also be moved by how children’s hospitals impact the lives of many, one patient at a time.”
The photos were chosen from more than 250 entries submitted by 57 children’s hospitals across the country. Among the judges were a former chief White House photographer and the director of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Judges were asked to consider the subject and quality of the photo as well as the composition, clarity of focus and structure.
Each of the photographs Serat has in the 2015 exhibit tells a different story:
* “On a Different Note” is a portrait of a burn patient treated at the Northern California Shriners Hospital playing the piano without the fingers she lost to her injury;
* “In Full Swing” is a portrait of a young girl shown swinging her prosthetic leg over a play structure in the hospital waiting area; and
* “Learning from the Best” captures the intense interaction between a Shriners Hospital surgeon and resident in the operating room.
Serat’s professional affiliations include the BioCommunications Association, where she serves on the board of directors, and the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. She has received numerous professional awards in photographic competitions, and has had photos published in textbooks, scientific journals and photo annals as well as displayed in media and artist’s exhibitions.
The Children’s Hospitals photo exhibit will begin its national tour in Washington, where the images will be on display to the public during the week of June 22 in the rotunda of the Russell Senate Building. The exhibit will travel around the country for two years, displaying at partnering organizations and children’s hospitals, including Shriners Hospitals for Children — Northern California.
