In mid-June, community members were disturbed when a noose was found hanging from a goal post at the Davis High School football field and when racist graffiti was discovered at several places in town.
In response, the city’s Human Relations Commission is working in partnership with Davis Media Access — the media center serving Davis and surrounding areas — to capture the experiences and viewpoints held by Davis community members.
Last week, the partners invited community members into DMA’s television studio to create a video collage focused on tolerance. The piece, titled “Speak Out for Tolerance,” reflects on experiences and viewpoints held by community members. It is being edited and will be available soon.
This week, a team of videographers and commissioners will roam throughout Picnic in the Park at the Davis Farmers Market from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to continue documenting the community’s response to, and feelings about, these incidents.
Interested individuals are encouraged to think about diversity and discrimination in Davis and how they might answer the question “What does tolerance mean to you?” in one or two sentences. Anyone of any age who is interested is encouraged to participate, individually, or with a small group.
Additional questions should be directed to commission chair Judith Plank at [email protected] or commission vice chair Craig Blomberg at [email protected].
