The Square Tomatoes Crafts Fair will celebrate its second anniversary in Central Park on Sunday, Aug. 3, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with brownies, dancing and a contest.
The Cloth and Fiber Contest offers a $50 prize for the best item made from yarn, felt or cloth. This includes cloth dolls, clothing, silk screening, knitting or any other cloth or fiber creation. Any local resident can compete.
In 2012, Square Tomatoes started with 15 booths in a parking lot and grew to a monthly festival in Central Park with 30 to 40 vendor booths, a nine-player jazz band and dancing. The fair showcases new and young vendors as well as highly experienced instructors from the UC Davis Craft Center.
At the Craft Center, Lea deGraffenried, Ian Holster and Sally Parker teach bronze sculpture, glass fusing, lapidary, bone carving, jewelry model making and lost-wax casting. The instructors will exhibit original carved jade, dichroic glass pendants, fused glass plates, and bronze and silver amulets, animals and sculptural jewelry.
Recently, Square Tomatoes added a Comfort Café where guests can sit, read, listen to music and chat. Dancing is encouraged. Square Tomatoes provides space in the shade for the jazz band and all visitors who want to dance.
More information on the Cloth and Fiber Contest may be found at SquareTomatoesCrafts.com. The prize is 25 spend-at-the-fair dollars and $25 cash.
Competitors may join by sending an email to [email protected] describing their entry and the display space needed, and by bringing their entry to Central Park at 10 a.m. on fair day.
