Students take up baton and try conducting at Montgomery Elementary

Students at Montgomery Elementary enjoyed a performance by the Harper Junior High Orchestra on Thursday, and several Montgomery students got to join teacher/conductor Greg Brucker on the podium and lead the orchestra.

“I explain (to the elementary school students) what a conductor does, and ask for volunteers to come up and try using a baton,” Brucker said. “And the kids jump at the experience. I am incredibly impressed at the musical understanding of our elementary students.”

Brucker added that the Harper Orchestra includes about a dozen students who attended Montgomery Elementary, “and they really look forward to going back to their old school and showing what they can do now (as junior high musicians).”

Brucker has been taking his junior high students to perform at elementary schools for seven years, and he believes the enthusiasm generated by these annual concerts is a factor in the rapid growth of the string music program at the junior high level, where student participation in orchestra has more than doubled in recent years.
