Sunrise Rotary honors student role models

The Sunrise Rotary Club of Davis recently honored several Davis and Da Vinci high school students as Students of the Month for May. They include:

Sara Albertson, nominated by science teacher Eric Bastin, who wrote, “Effort, results, positive attitude. These words pretty much sum up why I nominated Sara Albertson to be the science Student of the Month. She wants to learn for the sake of acquiring knowledge and leads by example in her lab group. In my class she has mastered the art of preparing for tests and consistently has one of the highest grades in any of my classes. Way to go, Sara!”

Amelia Crary, nominated by English teacher Helen Spangler, who wrote, “As a student in my science fiction class, Amelia has impressed me with her ability to ask questions. Her intellectual curiosity sets an example for others to engage in philosophical discussions about scientific discoveries and future inventions. As a member of FFA and a leader in animal science and research, Amelia brings to light many aspects of our world that others look past. She is engaged in learning and is especially talented as a writer. Her ability to communicate her ideas clearly opens a dialogue about our world that is relevant and articulate.

“Amelia is also kind and respectful to her peers and well liked by everyone she meets. She is artistic and creative and can use these abilities to solve problems. I look forward to seeing what Amelia discovers as she begins her studies in animal science at Cal Poly next year. I can only imagine the impact one smart, motivated, passionate student can accomplish, but I know she is destined for greatness.”

* Audrey Daggett, nominated by art teacher Ted Fontaine, who wrote, “During the beginning of the year, Audrey was having difficulty with photography. By the beginning of October I noticed that she had turned in little if any of the work that I had assigned. When I asked her about it she was somewhat reticent, however, soon enough I discovered that ‘photography is not my thing.’ After a brief negotiation, I gave Audrey an alternative, simply to articulate ‘what you want to do during class time, and, if it fits our curriculum, do it.’
“She likes to draw and paint. I gave her supplies, and that is what she did, every day in class for the full class period, with no distractions. She has moved from geometric designs to colorful fantasy characters. Her technique has improved to a level of freedom that I many of our students have difficulty finding. Audrey is a very artistic young woman who has expressed her desire to be creative in her own way. She shows us that we can make a place for our divergent thinkers and allows us as teachers to think outside the box.”

Marta Parke, nominated by social studies teacher Kristin Swanstrom, who wrote, “Marta Parke is the kind of student I wish I could multiply by 10 and sprinkle through all my classes. She’s hard-working and attentive to detail, as well as polite and kind to everyone around her. Marta commonly makes connections between course material and the real world and brings those into the classroom to make the curriculum more meaningful. Davis Senior High School is lucky to have two more years of Marta on campus!”

* Yulissa Perez, nominated by English teacher Janel Jahsi, who wrote, “Yulissa Perez is a young lady who embodies the whole ‘education is a privilege’ mind-set. She is taking every advantage to increase her English fluency both in speaking and writing. She has enlisted tutors to help with her school work, so she can stay on top of her assignments. She doesn’t mind asking for help and doesn’t complain when asked to redo an assignment. Yulissa understands the importance of mastery and she definitely has the motivation to succeed.
“Yulissa has a warm and generous personality that is contagious. I only have her for one class period, but I also observe her outside of class and I see many students interacting positively with Yulissa. In class, I asked a question, ‘What is your American dream?’ Yulissa answered, ‘My American dream is to learn English well, so I can go anywhere in the world. Because English is used everywhere.’ I truly believe Yulissa will achieve this dream and nothing will stop her.”

Claire Saiki, nominated by social studies teacher Caitlin Butler, who wrote, “Claire was chosen as Student of the Month because she has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic, integrity, and a positive attitude. Showing maturity beyond her years, Claire has been able to balance the demands of all her classes and her extracurricular activities. She is incredibly honest and trustworthy. All of her work in United States history is given her full attention and is completed with the utmost care. It is a delight to have such a wonderful student in my class, and a privilege to honor Claire as Student of the Month.”

* Ju-A Son, nominated by Spanish teacher Amelia Diaz, who wrote, “Ju-A brings joy to Spanish 4 Honors. In addition to being a wonderful scholar, Ju-A also models kindness, great work ethic and a positive attitude. Ju-A makes the class fun with her creative ideas and tasteful sense of humor.”

Nolan Yoo, nominated by information technology teacher Kevin Anderson, who wrote, “Nolan is currently taking the ROP Programming class and is one of the advanced students in Internetworking II (Cisco Networking Academy). He took the first Cisco Internetworking class last year at Davis High.

“Nolan has put a tremendous amount of effort into achieving networking skills as was shown this year as his team beat 900 teams to get into the final round of the Netriders North America/Canada competition. His team placed 13 out of 78 in the final round. He assumes a leadership role in the classroom, and readily helps both beginning and advanced students with course concepts. His positive outlook on learning motivates others around him.”

There are three Rotary clubs in Davis, which meet at noon Mondays, 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays and 7 a.m. Fridays. Members provide service to their community and internationally. For more information about Rotary, contact Dennis Lindsay of the Sunrise club at [email protected], Samer Alassaad of the noon club at [email protected] or Steve Boschken of the Sunset club at [email protected]

Notes: Da Vinci High School’s honorees will be publicized separately. In the April Rotary Student of the Month celebration, Alanna Quinn’s name was misspelled. She was honored by her biology teacher, Ann Moriarty, due to her hard work and improvement throughout the year.
