City Councilwoman Rochelle Swanson has raised more money than any other City Council candidate as of May 17, according to campaign finance reports.

Campaign finance statements due on Thursday, May 22, show that, as the June 3 election for two seats on the City Council nears, Swanson and Robb Davis have made strides in the money race ahead of other candidates. Sheila Allen, John Munn and Daniel Parrella, in that order, bring up the rear of the money race, although Davis, Allen and Munn are within a couple grand of each other.

Swanson has raised $16,075 in monetary donations for the calendar year up to the May 17 cut off. She ended the period with $2,430 in cash on hand. Davis raised $12,106 including $588 in loans and had $10,183 in ending cash on hand for the same period. Allen raised $11,638, including $2,000 in loans for the period. She ended the period with $3,121 in cash on hand and $2,000 in debts.

Munn raised $11,301, including $1,540 in loans and ended up with $3,804 in cash and $15,345 in debt. Parrella raised $9,150 with $3,750 in loans and $3,888 in cash at the end of the period.

Whether money translates to votes, and how much money translates to votes, is the perennial mystery of any local campaign, but lawn signs and mailers can help get a campaign’s message out. Especially when a candidate is running a first-time effort and needs name recognition.

In the last two City Council race cycles, successful candidates typically raised between $19,000 and $28,000. This is despite the city’s maximum individual donation limit of $100 per person.
